Wickenburg, AZ — Just 60 miles northwest of Phoenix in the northern reaches of the great Sonoran Desert, Wickenburg is noted for its clean air, good country living, wide-open spaces, western hospitality, guest ranches, tourism, medical services sector and all-around high quality of life. It is the Dude Ranch Capital of Arizona with four ranches that still offer a unique Western experience ranging from a cozy adobe hacienda to a modern ranch resort complete with a championship golf course.

Yoga at Gatehouse Academy in Wickenburg, Arizona is a large part of the recovery process for young adults struggling with drug and alcohol addictions and sometimes with mental health issues simultaneously.

Yoga originated in India, where it remains a spiritual tradition and is seen as a means to enlightenment. The yoga program at Gatehouse has been developed and run by Margaret Konopacki, owner of Evolve Yoga and Meditation Center. A master yoga teacher, Margaret has traveled the world learning different techniques of yoga. At Gatehouse she teaches a combination of Sivananda, Ashtanga, Karma yoga and “12-step” yoga. This activity is incorporated into the residents schedule to aid the addict in finding balance for their mind, body, and spirit.

Margaret talks about teaching yoga and meditation in recovery: “Certain positions (asanas) suggest “surrender” to the body. In mental health recovery, the most important step is the first one in which the realization that something is really wrong with the way you live your life and that trying to fix yourself does not work, is engendered. It is a cry for help that usually brings the individual into treatment. Great pain is in place. With the position of “child pose” the body and mind becomes still and the feeling is of safety; not unlike the fetal position in the womb. In this position the participant begins to surrender control because they are out of control.

When the body begins to move through certain poses everything else – the mind, spirit or “our awareness” or the “I” follows. I believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. This is a common expression in many belief systems. Our human experience is clearly expressed through the air we breath (pranajama – breath work ), the food we eat and dispose of, the movement we do (asana) our self awareness (meditation) our views of ourselves and others, our contact with a universal consciousness through what we say (prayer) and do. With daily yoga practice, your whole life becomes an ongoing meditation. What I find amazing about yoga is that 5000 years ago homo sapiens were already experiencing this practice and finding stress relief. This is not new information! How AA works into the formula at Evolve: I believe that the founders of Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) were incredibly astute and found a special formula for recovery which is called the 12 steps of AA. They found it through their own personal suffering. The amazing 12 steps began a worldwide revolution in the treatment of alcoholism – a prescription for recovery. This was their gift to the world. In our imbalanced and stress out world all people could benefit from the wisdom of this formula.

But what does this have to do with EVOLVE Yoga and Meditation Center? Everything. We work with individuals who are in incredible emotional and often physical pain. Most of them are ready to try something new to move out of this feeling. By practicing the principals set-up by the founders of AA and utilizing the great wisdom passed to us from the ancient practise of yoga from India, we here at EVOLVE teach this young generation a kinder, more balanced and happier way of life. This is not about religion or changing a belief system – this is about finding a body practice that brings balance, acceptance, non-judgment and peace. It works!
